And now, by chance, I came across a game that was clearly ahead of my time: Pit-Fighter. And now I’m with great pleasure I’ll tell you about her.
“Pit-Fighter” – this is arcade arennoye fighting, which was published in 1990 and developed Atari. The tie is simple – the player needs to prove that he is a real champion of underground battles. Only three playable characters are given to choose from: Bazz, former wrestler; Kato, Black belt of the third degree; Tai, kickboxing champion. The player will win in ten battles, and then meets face to face with the boss in the final match, for the title of champion.
Playable characters have unique movements and parameters. Three standard archives: strong, fast and dexterous. Players have to knock out all the nonsense from the most diverse non -granous opponents. They differ from each other not only by caricature appearance, but also by unique techniques and captures. An important feature of all enemies is that they are always stronger than the player. This can be seen already on the example of the first enemy Executioner. Which is not only higher and larger than the player, he also has more health (everyone has more health). Fighting with artificial boobs will not seem like honey. And for the victory over enemies, the player will pour a non -fingered amount of money. It’s a pity, nothing can be bought for them – it’s just record glasses. Although, the slot machines of that time already had a trend for pumping between levels (Xybots, Vindicators).
Every third match is a match, in which the player will have to arrange a battle with a shadow. To win, it is necessary to put the enemy on the shoulder blades three times. But this match can be failed, the game on this will not end just the player will lose additional prize points. By the way, if you play not one, but with your friends, you will have to fight not with clones, but with your friends. Ah, yes, I completely forgot to say that the game supports the cooperative up to three players. And in the company of good friends and the drying paint, look fun.
The fighting areas represent spacious urban places in which underground fights can occur: old sheds, evergreen metro, parking lots, ferries and dirty bars. On all arenas in the background are fans, they are by no means playing the role of furniture. Spectators may try to go to the arena with a knife at the ready, interfering with the course of the duel. But you can not worry about them, because the outrageous of an honest fight themselves can be cut from the participants. Also, people can push the participant into the arena if they hide in the crowd of spectators. And do not forget that our dear contemplators of high spectacles can throw chairs, sticks, knives, and other trash into the arena, which then you can no longer break through the enemy head. It is only known that he is the current champion of underground battles. And it is for this title that these battles are underway. And the champion can become only one! Therefore, at the very end, if you play in cooperative, First you need to defeat your comrades and only then fight with the boss. With the most powerful and not honest enemy in the game.
It is impossible not to note the obvious – people who were responsible for visual performance have worked for glory. The game is trying to give a pseudo 3D perspective. And the digitized actors in this environment do not look so ridiculous as competitors did the games (NARC 1988), but there is a clear trouble with animations. A very limited number and because of this movement came out very clumsy, they clearly lack plastic. And at one time this graphics, although it was not in a novelty, but in any case looked great. And the entire gameplay is accompanied by peppy music. You would know how some compositions come by the way. After all, they are a mix (!) music and voice samples: phrases, screams and savory sounds. Combinations and blows are not intuitive, and they do not always work when it is necessary. It was another year before Street Fighter II, and two years remained before Mortal Kombat.

Despite all the crooked, the game was quite popular. Especially in Japan. Therefore, the game naturally waited on home systems in the form of ports. The game itself for that time was technically complex – digitized actors and pseudo 3D Perspective were a luxury for many game systems of that time. Spoiler: the original not so exciting game was killed with a low power of home systems.
Atari 7800
First I want to talk about one port for Atari 7800 – This is the smallest of all represented systems. In 1992, when the port of the game was released, no one needed a console, because there were much more successful and powerful competitors. This was one of the reasons why the Pit-Fighter port was canceled halfway development. Now a dump of a working prototype is available on the network. What can I say … The game is not completed. The game does not have a menu, it just starts. Three identical men randomly go back and forth, and the fourth is a player. The enemies fall from the blows, but do not show any resistance. Putting all the enemies – the game does not stop. Will there be honestly draw any conclusions on it? I think no. Therefore, we will move on.
Atari ST and Amiga
Port s Amiga, for example, trying to be as similar as possible to the original, but somehow askance. And the gameplay is not so intense. I didn’t manage to turn this version for me (my eternal war with emulators), so I draw conclusions based on the gameplay viewed on YouTube.
Absolutely slowly, only worse, a port is played for Atari ST. Sounds of blows interrupt the music. Maybe then it was worth leaving one of two? In the fighting wing, they fight a lot, know, which means that the music will be put on a pause constantly.
Amstrad CPC
But on Amstrad CPC You can’t look without tears. Not only does the game look like an unfinished coloring, but it also works terribly bad. Honestly, I didn’t even understand which buttons in the game to move. I tried all the keys on the keyboard – to no avail. Why try to repeat the 3D perspective if the system cannot pull it? The version of the game for ZX Spectrum. It is not surprising, of course, because the ports have the same developer – Domark.
Commodore 64
Although they still made a version for Commodore 64. I tried to turn it on, but the emulator completely refused. I had to watch the game on YouTube again. And watching the gameplay I can say that this version at least looks like a game, I see a gapley, not a slide show (as it was with ZX Spectrum)! The game does not make attempts to 3D, and thanks. But the game is still slow. Yes, and the references of the fighters are three times, now the game is like the pirate Mortal Kombat to Dendy.
Sega Master System
The version of the game for Sega Master System meets with a cool 8-bit muzon. This is actually not the original topic of the game, but it is still cool. But the game looks peculiar. If only because large characters stung to small cockroaches. Why were there still reducing them? Well, at least all FPS in place, unlike previous ports. And the graphics are quite normal – it is clearly visible both the characters and the environment. But play it somehow … meh. It doesn’t smell like any action here, just poked limbs into the enemy. But the music is really bastard (I advise you to find it in a video version of the time code)!
Super Nintendo
Next in line Super Nintendo. “But now the action will finally go, because SNES was a fairly powerful home system.”I thought and turned on the game. Well … the game looks normal – the characters are well digitized. It is played, however, very inconvenient – the movements are inhibited, but the blows are not felt. And the game itself, by the way, is subject to censorship – all the blood is carved. Yes, and I didn’t succeed in playing normally. Health, as in the original arcade game, is not restored between rounds. And if he died, again. There are no loans or additional lives. Only if the arcade did not interfere, because you can cram coins and play on, then you can’t do it also.
Sega Genesis
Okay, what about competitors, and specifically at Sega Genesis (She Mega Drive)? At first I thought that this version is the same, but no. Genesis version works much better. At least there are additional lives in it, and you can also choose the level of complexity (this allowed you to play it longer). Blows are felt better, the game works faster, there are drops of blood and sweat. Yes, the characters were reduced again in size, and Ecan almost does not hide. But the game works at least humanly!
Portable releases – Game Boy and Atari Lynx
But all these were stationary systems, and the game also came out on portables. Let’s look at the version for Game Boy. What can I say? It is amazing that the version is generally trying to realistically convey those same digitized springs. But playing it is not very pleasant – management is not the best. And here is the same jamb as that SNES versions – no additional lives. And “Fezes”, by the way, is also not.
Well, nothing, because there is a version on Atari Lynx. And this portable was quite advanced, it had a wide screen and supported many colors! Productivity is higher than that GB, But playing is unimaginally unpleasant. Opponents clamp more than in the original. I generally can’t move. But at least there are loans, and thank you.
All this is a shame. Portable consoles, despite their low -power, can in long beautiful levels, and in a peppy action with smooth gameplay (Operation C). And here the arena with two men cannot do. Even Atari Lynx knows how to great ports, and Pit-Fighter I almost did it, but failed to the end.
Alas, the game did not set with the ports at all, the only playable port was Genesis – less jamb, more gameplay. And okay, the original arcade game that was a cult? Well, like. She even has a spiritual heir – Guardians of the ‘Hood. Bitemap about people from rocking.
