Review of the story campaign Warhammer 40.000- Space Marine 2.
The genre of shooters from the third person in the second half of the zero and the beginning of the tenths delighted gamers not only by the constant influx of new titles, but also with diversity: from adventure uncharted and brutal GEARS OF WAR to Asian exercises in the creative in the spirit of Vanquish. Then, however, his popularity was declining, as, indeed, of the entire Julesfish genre as a whole, and in recent years, like a fan of the genre, only GEARS 5 frankly pleased me. Yes, there were still relatively good representatives like Evil West, but in it, with all its advantages, the budgets showed out of all the cracks. Against the backdrop of such stagnation, my close interest aroused the continuation of the game from the same era when the TPS genre still stably gave the heat every year – Warhammer 40.000 – Space Marine 2. I went through the plot campaign of the game and would like to briefly share my impressions. A game of PlayStation 5 at the level of complexity “Veteran” in 10 hours.
Setting and plot.
SPACE Marine 2 setting, at least partially familiar even to those who did not touch the desktop Warhammer even with a long stick (I have this). An extremely distant future, the atmosphere of a total galactic war between not particularly similar factions, interesting finds like the presence of space orcs among the warring parties and the close relationship of technologies and religion in the empire of the Empire of mankind that openly giving the ancient Rome. It is precisely to him that our gloomy and broad -shouldered protagonist Titus, who has been regularly carries the word of the emperor for many years to those races who do not want to hear this word. This time, unlike the first part, where the orcs were the opponents, we bring positive vibrations of the pilome to the old, like Tiranids that the players who played for tens of hours in Helldivers 2 will be familiar with almost pain.
It’s not possible to say much about the plot itself-this, in fact, is a classic military-fantastic drama about gloomy men with large guns, who fulfill the task of the task and periodically overcame on the last cartridges and millimeters of Helsbar. Dialogues with partners in terms of meaningfulness and intellectuality during missions sometimes reminded me of the good old Spartans from the film by Zach Snyder, which for this genre, however, is not at all a minus. A definite plus of the campaign is its scale. Starting with a cheerful prologue, where the training immediately follows the same mission to overcoming, and ending with epic contractions in the final segments, the game tries to give a maximum impressions for his modest time to date. Yes, in comparison with the classic parts of the GEARS of War, sometimes there are not enough interesting staged scenes here, but in the current form, you do not want to find fault with the entertainment and dynamism of the campaign. The game, moreover, is well trying to create an atmosphere of a real military operation – with distribution of different detachments of different tasks with the settling deadlines and constant advance of the front.
Graphics and sound.
Picture in Space Marine 2 (in the “performance” mode on https://bettingsitesnogamstop.co.uk/review/magic-win/ PS5) by the standards of 2024 I can characterize as “just right”. It does not blur the roof with details or animations, but does not force to frown from the streams of soap. What, unfortunately, cannot be said about Katszen, which, especially judging by close plans of people, as if rejected in 720p. Another unusual minus is the absence of HDR, which is now almost everywhere used in games and often significantly improves the picture.
However, Space Marine 2 has one very large and undeniable advantage – this is the stylistics of its setting, which the authors carefully transferred to the screen. Giant Gothic fortresses and cathedrals, large -scale interiors of spaceships, huge powerful armor on the same huge and powerful ultramarins force a button to remove screenshots to work a little less often than the rest of the gamepad buttons. Visual design makes the impression of not the most technological picture of the game at a high -quality higher level.
The performance, by the way, did not disappoint me either – I did not mark visible drops in the frequency of personnel. But the loading could be done faster, periodically there is a feeling that you play the version for PS4, which does not use SSD on the current console.
I can’t say anything special about the sound – at 5.The game sounds good and periodically involves the rear speakers for the use of volume, but I have never caught myself thinking that I am additionally immersed in the game precisely thanks to the sound.
According to its game process, Space Marine 2 is a third -person purebred -face model GEARS of WAR. There is literally nothing superfluous here – neither pumping, no open locations, nor, the emperor to plow, the dialogue system. Only direct, like a sleeper, trajectories from the beginning of the mission to its end, with the periodic locking of the player of the companion on relatively small arenas and the flooding of it with bundles of opponents. Just the size of these packs is one of the business cards of the game. The fact is that in SM2 the developers used their “Roy” system, which not only fills the screen of the Hordes of enemies in the previous game, but also makes them be physically attended by a fight. If you see how two hundred bugs are rushing to your defensive position – you can start shooting them right right away, because not a single carcass of these two hundred is a decoration or background animation and will definitely try to bite your face either to you or your partner. We have three partners, by the way, and their composition does not change throughout the game (except “operations”, but this is a completely different mode). In general, they are quite archetypal and do not try to surprise with developed characters and interesting interactions with the main character, but they are steadily help with the shooting of opponents and almost immediately raise us in case of complete loss of health.
Now I’ll talk a little more consistent about gameplay. Before each mission, we find ourselves on a spaceship where you can listen to the next briefing, choose a mission or edit the starting equipment for the future sortie. Next, we go to the landing ship that will send us to battle. The game is not pleased with a great variety of tasks – we either just run from point A to point B, or protect the object, or just fight off the opponents until an important event occurs. At first, the game is generally inconsistent with missions with the protection of objects, which at some point even begins to strain. Well, at least the escort-gades were not added. The game also abuses the game of various kinds of doors, generators and littered plot passages, which, obviously, is made to stretch the missions rather modest in size.
The combat system itself is quite good between the slasher and the shooter. We have three slots of equipment: one for heavy weapons one for a pistol and one for near -fight weapons. For the latter, they even brought several combinations, but using them, given the number of opponents, is not always possible. Impact from shooting in the game is quite good, but does not reach the same “weight”. In addition, with a relative variety of rifle weapons, I did not note a big difference in the behavior of guns. Things are better with cold weapons – to reduce the number of opponents is very pleasant both with a classic with a lover and a huge knife and, especially, issued closer to the end of a combat hammer. Once again, breaking into a crowd of dozens of tyranids and turning them into bloody dust with a sword, sometimes you even forget about the presence of a bosom of a firearm. Sometimes you have to forget about it because the store in local guns is simply incredibly tiny and is spent much earlier than the next horde of enemies is coming to the end. This does not particularly matter in ordinary contractions, given the presence of a sword or hammer, but simply wildly infuriates in those moments where you need, for example, to shoot a hefty pack of flying harguls attacking the next important object.
Without departing from the current trends of Gamera, the authors did not fail to add old-like evasions and parries to Space Marine 2. On the one hand, in a game, where the mobility of the protagonist is somewhere between the tram and Gelendvagen, they look strange, and on the other, even on the preximal complexity of the window for them for about a million years, so it does not smell like any “sales” here. After God of War: Ragnarok, which periodically gave a fierce hardcore for his not “Seolslay” series at all, the difficulty is not felt at all. I mentioned the last passage of Kratos, among other things, due to the availability of similar systems for finishing systems in the Space Marine 2. Having caught a carcass of the right amount of lead, the opponents are highlighted in red and allow you to start brutal animation with them, which will not only restore us one of the two shields on top of the health, but also, similarly to the same God of War, will give a two -second respite in a long battle with a crowd of enemies.
There are bosses in Space Marine 2, but I don’t have special compliments for them – these are just lips for bullets with a fairly meager muvset and good damage. I was pleased with the final boss, but he is more likely the best of the worst.
Despite the substantial number of shortcomings I have noted in different aspects of the game, I absolutely do not want to scold it. Yes, this is absolutely not a masterpiece and not the project that after years will recall and reckon to elite generation representatives. But this is a very high -quality representative of an almost dying genre. With steep archetypal heroes, brutal battles, cool and not particularly hackneyed setting, epic scope of the plot and without irritating role -playing elements, which now love to push wherever possible. Just a good action movie for a dozen hours. There would be more of them.
My assessment – 8 points out of 10. Or very strong “Bold” According to the Stopgame system.
